Treating the cerebellum to improve ADHD function

The cerebellum is a part of the brain at the back of the skull, and research has shown that ADHD is associated with changes in cerebellar morphology and function that one is born with or that may have occurred during childhood.

How does self-EMDR support people with ADHD?

The Hallowell Brain Health program includes daily self-EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) as it has been proven to help people with ADHD perform better. EMDR works by helping to process difficult or traumatic memories, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms by doing sets of eye movements, modelled on the ones characteristic of Rapid Eye Movements (REM) sleep.

By simulating the REM during the EMDR therapy, you're essentially telling your brain: "I understand what happened, and it's no longer a threat.” Thus, instead of defaulting to an alarm state, the brain can store this memory as a regular one, replacing the initial one. EMDR, in essence, helps the brain reclassify the memory from a potential threat to a known event.
